Hike Table Mountain with a Guide, or On Your Own?

Do you need a guide to hike Table Mountain? Fees, SANParks's safety rules, what a guided hike costs and includes, small group or private, and when going alone is fine.

Updated November 2026

You do not need a guide to hike Table Mountain, and SANParks’ rates page lists no fee for the Table Mountain trails (checked November 2026). What SANParks does ask is that nobody hike alone: four is its ideal number. A guide is worth it if you are on your own or in a pair, if you have not done the route before, or if you want India Venster, the route with scrambling. Then the guide is the whole cost: US$60.53 a person on The Cape Town Local’s Table Mountain options on the dates we read (checked November 2026).

What SANParks asks of every hiker

SANParks’s safe-hiking page opens with a warning about attacks and muggings in and around the park, and sets out ten rules. The ones that decide the guide question:

  • Don’t hike alone; four is the ideal number.
  • Choose your route carefully, start early, and tell someone your route and when you will be back.
  • Walk at the pace of the slowest person.
  • Take waterproof clothing, even in midsummer, and enough water and food.
  • Stay on well-used paths and don’t wander into ravines.
  • Watch the weather and the time, and turn back before you run late.
  • Carry a charged phone. SANParks’s emergency number is 086 110 6417; the police are on 10111.

It also asks you not to show cash, cameras or valuables, and not to resist if someone tries to rob you.

What a guide adds

Company, which is SANParks’s first rule. Someone who knows the route, which matters most on India Venster, where Cape Mountain Guides’ description has a short B-grade scramble and a good head for heights needed. A pace and a turn-back time. And on the dawn and dusk Lion’s Head hikes, light: The Cape Town Local’s price includes flashlights or headlamps. Its guide is a registered guide qualified in first aid.

What a guide does not add is a ticket. The cable car down is extra on every guided hike here: the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway’s adult one-way fare is R300 online and R330 at the ticket office, valid 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 (checked November 2026).

Small group or private

A group hike goes at one pace. One three-star reviewer of Widevision Travel’s hike, in June 2026, was left behind most of the way by a fitter group and hiked largely alone; the reviewer called the guide kind but said nobody split the group by fitness. Widevision Travel’s hike also needs at least 3 people to run, and may move you to another day if it does not have them. A private hike sets the pace to yours; The Cape Town Local’s private option costs about three times its group price for one person, less each for two.

When going without a guide is fine

Map of Table Mountain's routes: Platteklip Gorge from Tafelberg Road, about 2.1 km as mapped, India Venster from the lower cableway station, about 2.5 km as mapped, and Skeleton Gorge from Kirstenbosch to Maclear's Beacon, about 4.1 km as mapped
The three main routes as mapped: Platteklip, which SANParks calls the most popular, India Venster with its scrambling, and Skeleton Gorge from Kirstenbosch.

If there are four of you, you know Platteklip or have read up on it, you start early with water and waterproofs, and you are ready to walk down if the cableway shuts, SANParks’s rules are met without a guide. Platteklip is the obvious route for that: the most direct and the most used. The Platteklip Gorge hike has the route, and is Platteklip Gorge open and safe? the closures and emergency numbers.
